The Hidden Fertility Factor Most Couples Overlook (And Why It Matters)

When you’re deep in the thick of trying to conceive and not seeing that second line month after month, the temptation to believe it’s all your body’s fault is real.

But what if the missing puzzle piece wasn’t you at all?

What if it was him and no one’s ever checked?

Let’s talk about varicoceles, one of the most under-diagnosed but common causes of male factor infertility.

What Is a Varicocele?

In simple terms, a varicocele is like a varicose vein…but in the scrotum. These enlarged veins can twist and cause blood to pool, disrupting healthy sperm production.

It’s basically a plumbing issue, but one with significant fertility consequences.

The frustrating part? It’s often completely missed. Even in men with “normal” semen analyses.

Why “Normal” Isn’t Always Enough

Here’s the truth I share with every Fertility Confidence Method (FCM) client: Normal on a lab report isn’t the same as optimal for conception.

Many couples come to us having been told, “His results look great.” But when we dig deeper into motility, morphology, or DNA fragmentation? There’s work to do.

Why? Because we need to have higher standards for sperm. If you’re curious what that looks like check out Labs 101.

The good news: we can absolutely work with that. But first, we need to see it.

What to Do If You Suspect Something Is Off

  • Push for a urology referral. Especially if your partner’s sperm numbers are low or borderline.
  • Consider varicocele surgery. For moderate to large varicoceles, surgical intervention can dramatically improve sperm count and quality. Men can see upwards of a 20-30% increase in sperm count 3-6 months after surgery.
  • Don’t ignore symptoms (or the lack thereof). Even asymptomatic men can have significant sperm issues. Sometimes, “no symptom” is the symptom. Meaning: even if there isn’t pain or heaviness, that doesn’t mean a varicocele isn’t present.

If you’re tired of feeling like you’re doing all the heavy lifting, you’re not alone. Fertility is a whole couple journey and it’s time your support system reflected that.

Inside HIS Confidence, our mini-course for male factor fertility, we walk through testing, optimal ranges, and what to actually do with the data.

Because you deserve answers, not assumptions.
