Is IgE the Hidden Fertility Factor No One’s Talking About?
If you’re navigating unexplained infertility or recurrent loss and still feel like no one’s asking the right questions… let’s talk about IgE.
It’s an antibody. But it could also be a red flag, and a massive aha moment, on your path to getting pregnant.
I’ll be honest, this is not something I was routinely testing. But once I dug deeper into the potential here, especially for my clients who were having recurrent miscarriages, I thought hmm.. Maybe we’re onto something?
🤔 What Is IgE?
IgE (Immunoglobulin E) is an antibody your immune system creates in response to allergens; things like pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or certain foods.
If your IgE levels are high, it means your body is on edge, reacting to what it sees as a threat, even if it’s something as harmless as your dog.
Here’s the kicker: When that “threat response” is turned up all the time, your immune system can also react to something else… like a developing embryo. (<< this is the issue).
🧪 What the Research Says
While there’s still more to uncover, early studies suggest that elevated IgE levels may be linked to increased risk of miscarriage. One study even showed that women with poorly managed asthma, a common IgE-driven condition, had a 60% higher risk of losing a pregnancy after three or more losses.
This is not saying every woman with asthma is going to have recurrent miscarriage, but there is an argument here to start screening for poorly controlled asthma in women who are TTC.
💡 You Might Have High IgE If…
- You have seasonal or environmental allergies
- You’ve had hives, rashes, or food sensitivities
- You live with asthma or eczema
- You get that “immune flare” when you’re stressed, tired, or run down
Even if you’re not sneezing constantly, your immune system might be overreacting in the background. We may be looking for subtle hints that you are mounting a continuously immune response to something that therefore is creating an environment that isn’t ideal for a developing embryo.
🔍 How to Get Ahead of It
This is something we assess and support inside Fertility Confidence Method, but you can take action now:
- Ask for an IgE test at your next blood draw
- Get honest about your allergens (yes, even if it’s your beloved dog. But before all my animal loving friends cancel me, I will say that keeping your bed an allergen-free zone and investing in good air purifiers goes a long way to help!)
- Support your gut + nervous system. 70% of your immune system lives in your gut, and stress is a massive trigger to immune dysfunction
- Explore safe immune support options and discuss possible supplementation with your care provider!
You deserve to know the full story. Fertility isn’t just about timing ovulation. For many of our clients, it’s about regulating a body that’s been in survival mode for too long.
